A pregnant mother of two was shot dead by police in a supermarket parking lot in suburban Columbus, USA. Ta’Kiya Young, 21, is said to have previously stolen alcohol from the supermarket.

A supermarket employee alerted the police to several people fleeing with stolen items. Among them was Ta’Kiya Young. “She stole something from the store,” her grandmother confirmed to The Columbus Dispatch newspaper.

A police officer approached Young’s car and told them to stop. Another officer stood in front of the vehicle. But instead of stopping, the pregnant woman accelerated her car – whereupon the officer standing in front of her shot through the windshield.

First, the car drove regarding 15 meters further. Eventually it came to a stop on the sidewalk. As a result, both Ta’Kiya and her unborn baby died at the scene.

Ta’Kiya leaves behind two sons, aged three and six. She should have given birth to a girl in November, her family told The Columbus Dispatch.

In her grief, the grandmother is critical of the fatal incident: “You shouldn’t have shot her. She would have gotten out of the car at some point. You shouldn’t have killed her and the baby.”

A donation page for the deceased was set up on the gofundme.com donation platform. Over $5,000 was raised in no time.
