A 23-year-old man from Voormezele lost his life following his vehicle was hit by a train on Monday morning at a level crossing between Poperinge and Ypres, the prosecution confirmed. Rail traffic, interrupted between the two cities, resumed at the end of the followingnoon.
The accident took place on Monday morning, shortly following 05:00, at the Poperingseweg level crossing in Vlamertinge (Ypres). The prosecution believes that the victim ended up by accident on the tracks.
The exact circumstances of the accident are not yet known and are under investigation. “At this time, there is no indication that other people were in the car,” the prosecution said.
The firefighters intervened to free the wreckage of the car stuck under the train. Only one passenger was on the train to Antwerp, he was taken to Ypres by taxi.
