Train crash death toll rises; In Palakkad division alone, 162 deaths and most suicides

Palakkad: The death toll from a train crash has risen sharply in the past year. Most of the accidents took place in the months when the train started running following the Kovid concessions. In the Palakkad Railway Division alone, 162 people were killed when a train hit them, according to the Railway Divisional Security Commissioner. The RPF says most of them committed suicide.

Twelve people were injured in the accidents. Careless phone use on the track can also lead to accidents. The RPF commissioner said strict action would be taken once morest those who were drunk on the track. Trafficking in cannabis, alcohol, drugs and gold also increased last year. 41 crore 53 lakh worth of goods were seized. 213 cases were registered for alcohol smuggling. 69 cases were registered for smuggling of tobacco products.
