Transforming Beer Bottles: The Story of WOBO – Innovative Sustainable Housing Solution

In the early 1960s, Alfred “Freddy” Heineken, the businessman behind the beer of the same name, returned from a trip to the Caribbean islands, then known as the Netherlands Antilles.

After seeing the amount of trash littering the island, including empty beer bottles, he came up with a rather original idea. What if he transformed his beer bottles into square bottles, in order to make bricks that might help build houses at a lower cost in poor countries?

Heineken contacts l’architecte John Habraken, director of the Foundation for Architectural Research, to work on this new bottle format. The result was called WOBO, and Heineken had a small bottle house built in his garden to test his concept.
