Triathlon Queen Birke Thielen: From Local Champion to World Championships Qualifier

Lonnig. After 2:15:33 hours over the short distance 1.0 – 41.9 – 9.54 km in Buschhütten, Birke Thielen had won her age group TW45 when she returned to the triathlon scene in May this year. In June, the start over the middle distance 1.9 – 88 – 20 km followed in Aldenhoven, where the Lonniger triathlete won her age group once more following 4:45:53 hours and thus became German Champion. Two weeks later, on July 2nd, at the IRONMAN European Championships for women in Frankfurt/Main, Birke Thielen finished the long distance 3.8 km swimming in 1:13:33, 180 km cycling in 5:23:49 and 42.195 km running in 3: 45:01 celebrated a real showdown in the total time of 10:31:55 hours. She finished third in her age group, qualifying for the World Championships in Hawaii in October.

It was a veritable trilogy that made her believe in herself – first cycling in Buschhütten, then swimming in Aldenhoven and finally running the marathon in Frankfurt.
