Trouble with wild campers: The downside of the motorhome boom

At the same time, thousands of millennials are converting panel vans and VW buses with futon mattresses and wooden cupboards into their own camping vans and celebrating their new freedom on Instagram, Pinterest and Youtube with the #Vanlife. But the trend also has its downsides. Motorhomes and campers are not welcome guests everywhere – especially wild campers.

Some regions are simply overwhelmed by the rush. In the Allgäu, on Lake Constance or on the North Sea islands, campsite operators reported occupancy at the limit during the summer holidays. Before a bank holiday weekend, many warn on their homepages: “We are fully booked.” “Since the distribution of guests is very uneven, some regions actually suffer from camping overtourism,” says Christian Günther, Managing Director of the Federal Association of the Camping Industry.
