Sweeping Medicaid Cuts Enacted, Sparking Healthcare Concerns

Washington D.C. – July 7, 2025 – A controversial bill containing significant reductions to Medicaid has been signed into law, triggering widespread debate over its potential impact on healthcare access for millions of Americans.the legislation, dubbed the “One Big Lovely Bill” (OBBB),authorizes $1 trillion in Medicaid cuts over the next decade, representing 15% of projected federal Medicaid spending.

The passage of the bill through both the House and Senate, driven by Republican support, marks a notable shift in federal healthcare policy. Advocates warn the cuts will disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, while proponents argue they are necessary to curb wasteful spending and address program fraud.

Impact on States and Vulnerable Populations

The financial burden of these cuts will not be evenly distributed. States like Louisiana and Virginia are expected to experience the most significant reductions in federal Medicaid funding. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates the legislation could lead to a 4% decrease in household resources for those wiht the lowest incomes, largely due to the combined impact of Medicaid reductions and changes to food assistance programs.

An estimated 17 million Americans could lose health insurance coverage as a result, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. This includes a substantial number of individuals dually eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid, who rely on the combined coverage for essential care.
