Trump Warns Iran of “Complete Destruction” as Middle East Tensions Escalate

Former President Donald Trump issued a stark warning Saturday, stating that Iran will be “hit very hard” and that the United States and Israel are prepared to expand the scope of their targets for “complete destruction.” The escalating rhetoric comes as Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian rejected Mr. Trump’s call for surrender, characterizing it as a “dream,” and as Iranian clerics prepare to select a latest supreme leader following the recent deaths of senior officials in U.S.-Israeli strikes.

“Today Iran will be hit very hard! Under serious consideration for complete destruction and certain death, since of Iran’s bad behavior, are areas and groups of people that were not considered for targeting up until this moment in time,” Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. This statement underscores a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict, which began with joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran on February 28, reportedly resulting in over 1,300 civilian deaths and the killing of dozens of senior Iranian officials, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to Iran’s UN ambassador, Amir Saeid Iravani.

Escalating Conflict and Regional Fallout

The situation remains highly volatile as Iran has retaliated against Israel and Gulf Arab states hosting U.S. Military installations. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed responsibility for a drone strike targeting the Al Dhafra Air Base near Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates, and also reportedly targeted a U.S. Base in Bahrain. Blasts were also reported in Doha. The UAE reported being targeted with 16 ballistic missiles and over 120 drones on Saturday, prompting a brief closure of Dubai’s main airport, a critical global transportation hub.

President Pezeshkian initially apologized to Gulf states for recent missile and drone attacks, a move Trump characterized as surrender. However, Pezeshkian later clarified that Iran’s attacks were directed at American military bases and facilities within the region, not neighboring countries. This conflicting messaging highlights the complex and rapidly shifting dynamics of the conflict.

Trump’s Role and Claims

Speaking at the Shield of the Americas Summit in Miami, Florida, Trump claimed the U.S. Had destroyed 42 Iranian navy ships in the past three days. This claim has not been independently verified. He also reiterated his desire to influence the selection of Iran’s next supreme leader, a proposition rejected by Iranian officials. Trump suggested he may have “forced Israel’s hand” in launching the strikes, stating he believed Iran was preparing to attack first. Fox News reported that sources indicated the timeline of the attack was accelerated to capitalize on an opportunity to strike regime leaders in Tehran.

Israel has continued its offensive, launching new strikes on Tehran and Isfahan, and conducting strikes in neighboring Lebanon targeting Hezbollah military sites. Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of Lebanon, where the death toll has climbed to 294.

Leadership Transition in Iran

As the conflict intensifies, Iran’s 88-member Assembly of Experts is expected to convene within the next 24 hours to choose a successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Ayatollah Hossein Mozafari, a member of the assembly, indicated a meeting could occur soon, though the format – in-person or online – remains uncertain. The selection of a new supreme leader will be a critical moment for Iran, potentially shaping the country’s future direction and its response to the ongoing conflict.

Gulf states have expressed outrage over attacks on their civilian infrastructure, including hotels, ports, and oil facilities, despite their non-involvement in the initial attacks. An Emirati official emphasized the demand for Iran to cease its aggression against Gulf states and de-escalate the situation, stating, “We don’t wish the war to expand.”

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz warned Lebanon that it would face a “very heavy price” if it failed to disarm Hezbollah, as outlined in a 2024 agreement. He stated that Israel would prioritize the protection of its citizens and soldiers, even at the expense of Lebanon’s stability.

The U.S.-Israeli attacks have resulted in at least 1,332 Iranian civilian deaths and thousands of injuries, according to Iran’s UN ambassador. Iranian attacks have killed 10 people in Israel and at least six U.S. Service members. The Israeli military reported intercepting missiles fired from Iran on eight separate occasions on Saturday.

The situation remains fluid and unpredictable. The coming days will be crucial in determining whether the conflict can be contained or will escalate further, potentially drawing in additional regional and international actors. The selection of a new Iranian supreme leader will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the future course of events.
