Trump’s Iran War: A Presidency Unraveling?

President Donald Trump warned of further strikes on Iran’s Kharg Island, escalating tensions as the conflict enters its third week, according to statements made Saturday and reported by NBC News. The remarks came as military and space research sites within Iran have faced destruction, prompting retaliatory actions that have heightened fears of a wider regional war and impacted global oil markets.

Trump’s comments, described as stating the US “may hit it a few more times just for fun,” follow earlier assertions that American strikes had “totally demolished” most of the island’s oil infrastructure. This claim contrasts with earlier reports suggesting the oil export infrastructure had remained largely undamaged.

The escalating conflict is unfolding against a backdrop of a presidency increasingly described as “unravelling,” according to Bruce Wolpe, a senior fellow at the University of Sydney’s United States Studies Centre. Wolpe argues that this war is not simply about Iran’s nuclear program, but encompasses a broader range of targets including ballistic missiles, the Iranian navy, regional terrorist proxies, and the governing infrastructure, with the ultimate goal of regime change.

The stated objective of “unconditional surrender” has been repeatedly emphasized by Trump, who has likewise indicated a desire to select Iran’s next leader. He referenced a perceived success in Venezuela, suggesting a similar model could be imposed on Iran, though no Iranian collaborators have yet emerged.

Despite these assertions, Wolpe notes that support for the war is exceptionally low compared to previous conflicts initiated by other presidents. Concerns are growing about the potential for stagflation, with slower economic growth, higher inflation, and stagnant wages potentially influencing the November midterm elections.

Internal divisions within the White House are also apparent. Vice President JD Vance has been conspicuously quiet on the issue, and Trump himself acknowledged Vance’s “philosophical” differences, suggesting a degree of reluctance regarding the war. A White House official reportedly stated that Vance “just opposes” the conflict.

Trump’s planned summit with President Xi of China on March 31 presents a potential off-ramp. The prospect of facing Xi with an ongoing, unresolved conflict in Iran may prompt a reassessment of strategy.

The situation remains volatile, with Iran continuing to exert control over the Strait of Hormuz, despite Trump’s claims that the waterway is “in great shape.” Oil prices continue to spike, and tankers remain at risk, suggesting the conflict is far from a swift resolution. Trump has stated the war is “very complete, pretty much” and “will be ended soon,” but characterized it as a “short-term excursion” contingent on his “feelings.”
