Tunisia: Tunisian swimming champion Osama Mellouli announced today, Monday, his withdrawal from participating in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and retiring from international competitions.

“After a month of ordeal, I lost all hope of reconciliation or winning my cause … So I decided to withdraw from international competitions and the Tokyo Olympics,” Mellouli wrote on his Facebook account.

Mellouli won the gold medal in the 1500m freestyle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and won the gold medal for the 10km marathon at the 2012 London Olympics, in addition to winning the bronze medal for the 1500m freestyle.

Mellouli expressed his grumbling after he appeared with his mother, who runs his business, before the security authorities a few days ago, while preparing for his sixth participation in the Olympic Games.

It was not possible to obtain a comment from the swimmer when the German News Agency (dpa) contacted him, and the Tunisian Olympic Committee did not clarify his position at the beginning of the delegation’s travel to Tokyo.
