UBOS Chief Dr. Chris Mukiza Receives Rotary Vocational Award

Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), has been honored with the Rotary Vocational/Service Award by the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda for his leadership in national statistical production and professional excellence.

The award was presented during a ceremony at Statistics House in Kampala, attended by members of various Rotary clubs from the Kampala Metropolitan Area. Hon. Mike Sebalu, District Governor for D9213 and a member of the Rotary Club of Bukoto, served as the chief guest for the event.

In his address, Hon. Sebalu emphasized the critical role of accurate data in national governance, stating that statistics serve as the essential foundation for decision-making. He noted that the quality of data produced by UBOS directly influences policy formulation, national budgeting, and the monitoring of service delivery across the country.

Institutional Impact and Selection Process

The Rotary Vocational Award is granted following a multi-stage vetting process. According to Hon. Sebalu, the procedure begins with nominations proposed by club members, which are then reviewed by a board before being submitted to the general assembly for final approval. The board recognized Dr. Mukiza for delivering high-quality statistical outputs that reach from the national level down to the lowest administrative units.

Institutional Impact and Selection Process

Ann Kamugisa, President of the Rotary E-Club of Ntinda, stated that Dr. Mukiza’s leadership has strengthened the institutional credibility of UBOS. She described the bureau as a key pillar in Uganda’s national planning, providing necessary data support for the government, private sector stakeholders, and international development partners.

Statistical Integration and Community Service

During his acceptance remarks, Dr. Mukiza characterized the award as a reflection of the collective commitment of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics to produce policy-responsive and reliable data. He noted that the recognition serves as motivation to further enhance the country’s statistical capacity.

Dr. Mukiza highlighted the intersection between statistical data and community welfare, citing how Rotarians utilize such data to complement government efforts. He specifically pointed to the operation of the cancer unit at Nsambya Hospital and the blood bank at Mengo Hospital as examples of service delivery aimed at improving citizen welfare through evidence-based needs.

A member of the Rotary Club of Muyenga and a Major Donor, Dr. Mukiza encouraged UBOS staff to join Rotary clubs to expand their professional networks and align their vocational skills with community service. He maintained that the bureau will continue to strengthen the national statistical ecosystem to ensure the availability of regular data for development purposes.
