At the UN, Ukraine and its allies condemn the “attacks” on the evacuations

Ukraine and its allies, including the United States, France and Japan, condemned the “strongly shelling of evacuation zones” in Kherson following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam. “[Nous] We call on the Russian authorities to stop such attacks and to allow the evacuation teams to help the affected populations without hindrance,” Ukrainian Ambassador to the UN Sergiy Kyslytsya told reporters. “We also call on the Russian Federation to allow full, safe and unhindered access to the affected areas on the left bank of the Dnieper River which is under the control of its army, so that humanitarian actors, in particular the United Nations and the ICRC, can help the inhabitants,” he added.

Ukrainians have accused the Russian army of hitting Kherson in recent days as thousands of civilians are evacuated from flooded areas following the destruction of the Kakhovka dam located upstream on the Dnieper River. According to kyiv, one person was killed and 18 injured, including members of the emergency services, in Russian strikes on the center of Kherson and the surrounding area.
