Ukraine Crisis: Glückskette Launches Emergency Appeal for Aid

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

As the conflict in Ukraine continues, the Glückskette (Chain of Goodness) foundation is renewing its appeal for donations, warning that the humanitarian situation is becoming increasingly critical. Millions of Ukrainians – particularly children, women, and the elderly – have been displaced, seeking refuge in neighboring countries or safer regions within Ukraine, and the foundation is actively supporting those affected through partner organizations.

The Glückskette has already deployed 80% of the funds raised since 2022, totaling CHF 137.3 million, to provide aid within Ukraine and to Ukrainian refugees in Poland, Romania, Moldova, Hungary, and Switzerland. However, with international humanitarian funding decreasing and the ongoing needs, the organization is concerned about the long-term sustainability of its support efforts. The current crisis represents the second-largest fundraising campaign in the foundation’s history, surpassed only by the response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, which garnered approximately CHF 228 million in donations, according to the organization.

The foundation’s work focuses on several key areas, including support for internally displaced persons through financial assistance, psychological care, and shelter. the repair of homes and critical infrastructure; and ensuring access to medical care by rebuilding facilities and supporting vulnerable individuals. Since 2022, the Glückskette has financed 134 projects, assisting nearly 4.9 million people in collaboration with partners like Caritas, the Swiss Red Cross, Helvetas, Medair, and Terre des hommes.

The Growing Humanitarian Crisis in Ukraine

The situation in Ukraine remains dire, with the United Nations estimating that 17.6 million people currently require humanitarian assistance. The ongoing war has caused immense suffering and widespread damage to essential infrastructure, leaving millions in need of basic necessities. The Glückskette’s appeal comes as the three-year mark of the full-scale invasion approaches, highlighting the protracted nature of the crisis and the continued need for international support. According to the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and injuries, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Swiss Solidarity and Ongoing Support

The initial wave of solidarity from the Swiss public following the outbreak of the war in February 2022 was substantial, with over CHF 130 million donated to the Glückskette. This outpouring of support allowed the foundation to quickly launch numerous humanitarian projects. However, as the conflict drags on, maintaining this level of funding is proving challenging. The Glückskette emphasizes the importance of continued donations to ensure that vital aid can reach those who need it most. Donations can be made online at www.glueckskette.ch or via postal account 10-15000-6, with the reference “Krise in der Ukraine.”

Looking Ahead: Sustaining Humanitarian Aid

The Glückskette’s renewed appeal underscores the long-term commitment required to address the humanitarian consequences of the war in Ukraine. The foundation is actively working to ensure that aid is delivered efficiently and effectively, with rigorous monitoring and evaluation processes in place. As the conflict continues and the needs evolve, sustained international support will be crucial to alleviating the suffering of the Ukrainian people. The foundation will continue to collaborate with its partner organizations to adapt its programs and respond to the most pressing challenges.
