Ukrainian naval forces destroyed a Russian Kamov Ka-27 helicopter as it attempted to land on the Syvash drilling platform in the Black Sea on Thursday, March 5, according to a statement from the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The operation, conducted in coordination with units of Ukraine’s Special Operations Forces, targeted the Russian-occupied platform during a nighttime strike. Ukrainian officials have not yet disclosed the specific weaponry used in the operation, nor the precise location of the strike beyond identifying the Syvash platform as the target.
The Ka-27 is a Soviet-era, ship-based anti-submarine helicopter capable of detecting and engaging submarines at depths of up to 500 meters, with a combat radius of approximately 200 kilometers. It has a top speed of around 270 km/h and an operational range of 800-900 km, allowing it to operate from ships and coastal airfields.
This marks the second reported destruction of a Ka-27 helicopter in recent weeks. On February 17, Ukrainian forces reportedly struck a Russian Ka-27 near Kamyshly, Crimea, according to the Armed Forces of Ukraine General Staff.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has not yet commented on the reported destruction of the helicopter on March 5. The Kyiv Post reported that Russia has made no public statement regarding the incident.
