Russian air attacks across Ukraine early Saturday resulted in at least four confirmed fatalities and damage to critical infrastructure, including a port facility and a maternity hospital, Ukrainian officials reported. The attacks underscore the continued intensity of the conflict as it enters its third year.
In Odesa, Sergiy Lysak, head of the city’s military administration, stated that two individuals were killed and at least 13 were injured in the strikes. He specifically noted damage to the roof of a maternity hospital. Images released by Ukrainian emergency services depicted shattered windows, internal rubble and firefighters actively working to contain the aftermath of the attack.
“There was no military purpose whatsoever – this was pure terror against ordinary civilian life,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement posted on social media. His comments reflect a recurring accusation leveled against Russian forces regarding the targeting of civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine’s state ports authority reported that a port in the Odesa region also sustained damage during the shelling. The extent of the damage and its impact on grain exports, vital to the Ukrainian economy, remain unclear.
The attacks came after Ukraine’s air force reported intercepting 252 out of 273 drones launched by Russia overnight. This represents a significant aerial assault, though the high interception rate suggests the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defenses.
Further inland, in Kryvyi Rih, a man was killed in a morning strike that impacted an industrial site, according to Oleksandr Ganzha, head of the Dnipro regional administration. Fires broke out at the site as a result of the attack.
In the Poltava region, one person was killed after Russian drones struck a residential building and industrial facilities. Details regarding the specific targets and the circumstances of the civilian fatality are still emerging.
Zelensky reiterated his call for increased international pressure on Russia, stating, “Each such strike proves that Russia has no intention of ending this war. That is why any easing of pressure on it is dangerous.” This statement appears to be directed at nations considering a reduction in sanctions or diplomatic engagement with Moscow.
Simultaneously, Russia reported a drone attack within its own territory. Mikhail Evraev, governor of the Yaroslavl region, announced via Telegram that a child was killed in a drone attack. Moscow claims to have intercepted and destroyed a total of 155 Ukrainian drones overnight. These claims have not been independently verified.
The reciprocal attacks highlight the escalating nature of the conflict and the broadening geographic scope of hostilities. While Ukraine continues to receive military aid from Western allies, the intensity of Russian strikes underscores the challenges facing Ukrainian forces and the vulnerability of its civilian population.
