UMaine Launches Black Bear Fund & NIL Opportunities for Student-Athletes

ORONO, Maine – The University of Maine Athletics department has established the Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund, a new initiative designed to bolster support for its student-athletes and maintain competitiveness within the evolving landscape of college sports. The fund comes as the NCAA adapts to recent legal changes, including the House vs. NCAA settlement, which allows for direct compensation to athletes.

The Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund will provide fans with opportunities to contribute to UMaine’s varsity athletic programs and directly support student-athletes through scholarships, improved nutrition, travel assistance, and now, direct payments. Donors can choose to allocate their contributions to specific teams or provide general support for the program as a whole.

“We are excited to offer these new opportunities for our incredible fans to further support their favorite Black Bear teams,” said Jude Killy, Vice President and Director of Athletics, in a statement. “As the college sports landscape rapidly evolves, UMaine is committed to securing new private and philanthropic funding that enables us to creatively and compliantly support our talented student-athletes and ensure Maine’s leadership and excellence in an increasingly competitive Division I landscape.”

The fund was established in collaboration with the University of Maine Foundation to maximize its impact. It aims to provide a comprehensive experience for student-athletes, ensuring UMaine remains competitive and adaptable in the changing world of collegiate athletics. Expanding Support Through NIL Opportunities

Beyond the Student-Athlete Experience Fund, UMaine is actively facilitating opportunities for athletes to benefit from Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) agreements. The university is working with several partners to connect student-athletes with potential endorsement deals and sponsorship opportunities.

Van Wagner, a sports marketing firm, is dedicated to enhancing the Maine Athletics brand and securing comprehensive sponsorship packages. According to the University of Maine Athletics website, Van Wagner manages elements including digital advertising, broadcast rights, and jersey patches, and facilitates connections between companies and student-athletes for brand representation. Interested companies can contact Van Wagner general manager Laurie Lozier at [email protected].

Fans can directly support UMaine student-athletes through the Bear Down Collective, the official collective of UMaine Athletics. Membership levels offer exclusive benefits, and contributions can be designated for specific sports.

The University is also partnering with Icon Source, a digital marketplace connecting athletes with brands for sponsorship and endorsement deals. Icon Source provides a platform for athletes to engage in NIL activities without fees, though the use of university marks and facilities remains restricted to official sponsors, like those secured through Van Wagner.

UMaine affirms its support for student-athletes’ ability to leverage their NIL rights, adhering to NCAA regulations, state and federal laws, and the University’s Student Code of Conduct. The University’s NIL policy can be found here.

The launch of the Black Bear Student-Athlete Experience Fund and the expanded NIL support represent a significant step for UMaine Athletics as it navigates the evolving landscape of college sports. The university’s commitment to providing resources and opportunities for its student-athletes aims to ensure continued success and competitiveness in the years to reach. The ongoing development of these programs will be crucial as UMaine seeks to attract and retain top talent and maintain its position as Maine’s only Division I athletic program.
