The country faced bad weather that caused incalculable loss of life and material damage.

The United Nations will disburse US$1.5 million to help the government of Rwanda respond to deadly floods and landslides caused by torrential rains, according to an official statement on Sunday.

Under-Secretary-General Martin Griffiths, the world body’s relief coordinator, has authorized the allocation from the Central Emergency Response Fund, said Stephane Dujarric, the UN Secretary-General’s principal spokesman, Antonio Guterres.

« With this funding, UN agencies and their partners provide essential assistance with food security, healthcare, shelter and basic household items to people displaced by floods and landslides “, explained Mr. Dujarric, recalling that “the northern, western and southern provinces of Rwanda were hit by heavy rains in May, causing floods and deadly landslides”.

Official estimates put the death toll at 135 and 18,000 displaced. The rains have had a heavy impact on homes, roads, crops and livestock.
