GENEVA – Almost 3,800 migrants died en route from North Africa or the Middle East to Europe last year, according to UN data. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Tuesday that this was the highest number of victims since 2017. The number of unreported cases is probably much higher, the UN agency said. “This alarming death toll on the migration routes (…) requires immediate attention and concerted efforts to improve the safety and security of migrants,” urged IOM Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Othman Belbeisi.
