An international team of scientists, including chemists from the University of Catania, SpringStyle Tech Design Ltd, the National Archives of Romania and the Polytechnic University of Milan, carried out a study aimed at uncovering health conditions Government of Cepesknown as Count Dracula.

They analyzed proteins and peptides from handwritten letters written by Tepes himself.

As a result of the study, scientists discovered more than 500 peptides of human origin on paper, which they narrowed down to the hundred most significant. Among them were traces of ciliopathies, a genetic disease that affects the functioning of cells and organs, as well as signs of an inflammatory disease that might cause problems with the respiratory tract and skin, Analytical Chemistry reports.

In addition, the scientists found compounds indicative of hemolacria, a condition in which blood mixes with fluid in the tear ducts, which can lead to tears mixed with blood.

These findings represent new aspects of Tepes’ biography and may influence his historical role as a leader and perceptions of his health at the time.
