The number of coronavirus contaminations remains low in Belgium, but is increasing steadily, according to the latest report from professor of occupational medicine at KU Leuven, Lode Godderis, who compares the evolution of virus transmission within different economic sectors.

The incidence, which indicates the number of new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, rose to 27 for the period from November 13 to 26. For comparison, this rate regularly exceeded 150, even 200 at the height of the pandemic. Among all sectors, healthcare has the highest incidence, with a rate of 61.

Local peaks are also observed in the residential care, telecommunications, financial services and insurance sectors. “The trigger for this new analysis was the fact that we were hearing more and more cases of people infected with the coronavirus, including in their workplace“, explains the professor. “Although the incidence remains low compared to what we have already experienced, an upward trend is clearly present. We expect this to continue through the end of year period and the remainder of the winter.
