These include dengue fever, Zika fever, malaria and respiratory diseases. What do internally displaced people know regarding these diseases? Our correspondents in Bandiagara, Ansongo and Timbuktu visited some sites for us. According to health experts, the frequency of some of these illnesses is linked to cold weather and other factors.

Reportage

On displaced people’s sites in Bandiagara, some believe that they have no information on these diseases. However, others claim the opposite. According to them, they acquire information through the media and people who come to raise awareness on the sites. “ I heard regarding dengue fever on the radio and some people came to explain to us that the disease is transmitted to humans by mosquito bites. As a precaution, they gave us mosquito nets, brooms, bleach for the prevention of this disease ” affirmed Adam Débogua.

« I have never heard of this disease because I don’t listen to the radio and I don’t go out either. So it’s difficult to be informed. We really want to be given more details, information regarding dengue fever because we are foreigners and we don’t want to catch this disease. », according to this other displaced person named Seydou Traoré.

An acute respiratory illness in Ansongo

At least 15 people lost their lives among the displaced people from Outagouna residing in Ansongo in the Gao region. According to Mohamed Ahmid, one of the displaced people from the site, it is an illness which manifests itself as “ sore throat, difficulty swallowing, eating or breathing “. Dengue or not he is not able to say.

The information is confirmed by the head doctor of the Ansongo health center. “ There is a sore throat that has been developing for a while and which mainly affects displaced people. This angina leads to deaths and also causes respiratory distress », According to Abdoul Baki Diallo. However, he is categorical, “to date there are no cases of dengue fever and Zika fever on the displaced sites in Ansongo”.

Same situation in Timbuktu

Internally displaced people face malaria and respiratory diseases among children. Also on site, no cases of dengue fever and fever have been reported to date at the local IDP sites. However, Youssouf Mohamed Cissé in charge of the information system of the local social development and solidarity economy service is sounding the alarm. ” NOTWe are witnessing a proliferation of mosquitoes on certain displaced persons sites, causing several cases of malaria. Children, for their part, face acute respiratory infections. Elderly people are also very fragile during this period ».

To minimize the damage, the local social development and solidarity economy service in Timbuktu opted for awareness-raising. Focus groups are organized on the sites to inform internally displaced people and draw their attention to new diseases.

More than 700 cases of dengue have been reported in Mali according to the national health directorate. These positive cases come from the regions of Koulikoro, Mopti, Sikasso, Kayes, Ségou and the district of Bamako. As a preventative measure once morest dengue fever, Zika fever and respiratory infections, doctors are urging people to protect themselves once morest mosquitoes and the cold.
