It’s the season for respiratory illnesses and many are concerned regarding the increase in cases of invasive group A streptococcal infection in the country. Already, five people have died in New Brunswick linked to this infection. Dr. Yves Léger, interim chief medical officer of health for the province, provides an update on the situation.

“It’s an infection that is contagious, so it spreads from person to person, but fortunately it’s not an infection that spreads easily. It still requires fairly close contact. And even people who live in the same household as another case of the strept of the group do not usually become infected with the bacteria. »
