Urban Cultural Heritage Directorate. brussels is investigating the sale of a silver and malachite table service estimated at several hundred thousand euros. A service designed by Austrian architect Josef Hoffmann for the Palais Stoclet, which he also designed on avenue de Tervuren. Except that since 2006, all the furniture of this masterpiece of Art Nouveau, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, has been classified.

Regularly, the direction of the cultural heritage of Urban. brussels will scrutinize the sites of auction houses by virtue of its jurisdiction over the illicit trade in works of art. Recently, Isabelle Leroy in charge of Unesco heritage came across this service. “It was a shock and therefore it called for verification“.

Infractions ?

Because the sale of this service which includes two salt shakers, a basket and two other small jars, if it appears in the classification order, would be illegal. “First of all, everything here should clearly have been subject to customs formalities and we have no trace of them. Moreover, the classified elements must remain inside the Palais Stoclet. Any outing is an offense“.
