Unveiling the Microscopic World of Mushrooms: Insights from the National Reference Center for Invasive Mycoses and Antifungals

At the National Reference Center for Invasive Mycoses and Antifungals at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, mushrooms are scrutinized.

Researchers examine 800 samples there each year: strains of yeast or filamentous fungi – mold – are analyzed in culture, particularly under a microscope, to determine their species and their possible resistance to treatments.

“Visible or invisible, mushrooms are everywhere“, announces Professor Fanny Lanternier, infectious disease specialist at Necker hospital and head of the Reference Center at the Pasteur Institute, who is launching the “Pasteurdon”, annual operation to collect donations for research.

Mycologists believe that there are at least 1 million species on Earth.
