This is the last straw: last week, yet another violent event occurred at the Red Cross day reception center in Namur, with police evacuation. Following this, the institution is closing its doors until further notice.

We experience this type of situation every week now.“, the center explains to us. The problem is the situation of people in precarious situations which has been worsening for two years: consequences of the covid crisis, migration crisis, mental health problems, dealing and drug consumption…”The security of both beneficiaries and members of the Red Cross is now in danger, and the center can no longer offer dignified reception conditions.“, explains the Red Cross in a press release. Usually, the Namur center welcomes an average of around fifty homeless people per day.

Call to authorities

Aware of the worsening of homelessness in large cities and at the dawn of the winter period, the Belgian Red Cross therefore invites the authorities and partners to redefine together the framework and operating methods of a Namur day reception center, in order to offer a serene and respectful welcome place for everyone“, adds the Red Cross in its press release.
