United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28), which will begin its work in two weeks in Dubai, to be the place to urgently bridge the climate ambition gap.

This came during statements made by the official spokesman for the Secretary-General, on Tuesday, announcing the launch of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change in Bonn, Germany, its synthesis report on countries’ nationally determined contributions.

He stated that under current national plans, global greenhouse gas emissions are scheduled to increase by 9% by 2030, compared to 2010 levels. He recalled that the world is demonstrating that emissions must decrease by 45% by the end of this decade compared to 2010 levels to achieve the goal. Limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees. “It is time for the greatest climate ambition to emerge in every country, city and sector,” he said.
