US Ambassador Blocked From French Government Access After Summoning Snub

by James Carter Senior News Editor

Paris – France has taken the unprecedented step of barring U.S. Ambassador Charles Kushner from direct access to French government ministers, escalating a diplomatic dispute sparked by comments regarding the death of a young French far-right activist. The move, announced Monday by the French Foreign Affairs Ministry, underscores growing tensions between the two nations over the handling of the case and perceived interference in French affairs.

The immediate cause for the ban stems from Kushner’s response to the February 12th death of Quentin Deranque, 23, who died two days after sustaining severe head injuries in a brawl in Lyon. The U.S. Embassy shared a post from the State Department’s Counterterrorism Bureau on X (formerly Twitter) stating that reports of Deranque being “killed by left-wing militants, should concern us all,” and warning of a rise in “violent radical leftism.” This prompted accusations of interference from French officials, who are investigating the incident as a criminal matter.

Summoning and Subsequent Action

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot had summoned Kushner to explain the comments, but the ambassador “did not appear” on Monday, according to a statement released by the Quai d’Orsay. “Faced with this apparent misunderstanding of the basic expectations of an ambassador’s mission, the Minister has requested that he no longer have direct access to members of the French government,” the statement read. Despite the restriction, Kushner will still be permitted to fulfill his diplomatic duties and engage in “diplomatic exchanges” with officials, though not directly with ministers.

The French Foreign Minister previously stated his intention to summon Kushner on Sunday, labeling the embassy’s commentary on the incident as “interference” in an interview with radio station France Inter. “We are summoning the US ambassador to France because the embassy issued a commentary on this event which concerns the national community. We reject any interference in this event,” Barrot said.

Investigation and Arrests

Authorities have charged two individuals with murder in connection with Deranque’s death, and a total of 11 people have been arrested, according to reports. The fatal brawl, captured on video, showed several masked individuals assaulting a man on the ground, sparking widespread shock and anger across France.

This incident has also ignited a diplomatic spat with Italy, as Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that Deranque’s death was caused “by groups linked to left-wing extremism” and condemned “a climate of ideological hatred sweeping several nations.”

Previous Diplomatic Friction

This is not the first instance of friction between Kushner and French authorities. In August 2025, the Foreign Ministry summoned Kushner after he publicly criticized the French government’s response to antisemitism, accusing them of a “lack of sufficient action.” At that time, the US Chargé d’affaires was summoned to the ministry in Kushner’s absence, as he was not in Paris, according to CNN.

The U.S. State Department and the U.S. Embassy in France have been contacted for comment, but have not yet responded.

The situation remains fluid, and the long-term impact on U.S.-French relations remains to be seen. Further developments are expected as the investigation into Deranque’s death progresses and as both governments navigate this delicate diplomatic challenge.
