US Ambassador’s Absence from Polisario Commemoration Sparks Diplomatic Tensions: A Closer Look

2023-11-14 22:00:11

This Tuesday, November 14, the United States ambassador to Algeria did not accompany a delegation made up of twelve Algerian parties, which was going to the Tindouf camps to commemorate a Polisario “party”. Several Algerian media had nevertheless announced the trip of Elizabeth Moore Aubin with the political parties, with supporting photos from the guest room at Algiers airport.

“Moroccan pressure convinced American officials to order Ms. Aubin not to go to the Polisario with Algerian political parties. The diplomat then had to cancel her project,” confides a Moroccan source in statements to Yabiladi. The actions of ambassadors require the prior green light from their hierarchies. In May 2022, the United States ambassador to Algeria visited the Tindouf camps, but without raising the ire of Rabat.

The Polisario gave the Algerian delegation a warm welcome this Tuesday, with a political meeting chaired by Brahim Ghali.
