US Evacuates Over 43,000 Citizens From Middle East Amid Conflict

by Omar El Sayed - World Editor

The U.S. State Department has facilitated the evacuation of over 43,000 Americans from the Middle East since February 28th, as regional tensions continue to escalate. The ongoing conflict, particularly the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran, has prompted a large-scale effort to bring American citizens home, utilizing both government-chartered flights and leveraging civilian resources.

The evacuation efforts represent a significant logistical undertaking, coordinated by the State Department under Secretary Marco Rubio, according to a social media post by President Donald Trump. The scale of the operation underscores the growing concerns for the safety of American citizens in the region, and the commitment to providing assistance during a period of heightened instability. The State Department has been working to move thousands of people out of various countries throughout the Middle East “quietly, but seamlessly,” as President Trump described it.

Notably, a Recent England Patriots team plane, normally stationed at Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport, played a role in these evacuations. The aircraft, operated by a charter company, transported hundreds of Americans to Washington, D.C. On Friday morning, as confirmed by a social media post from Assistant Secretary of State for Global Public Affairs Dylan Johnson. The State Department directly funded the use of the plane, emphasizing that the Patriots organization itself was not involved in the flight planning. According to a statement released by the Patriots, their team planes are operated by a charter company when not in use during the football season, and the team encourages their use for “missions like this and other humanitarian and national interest type missions.”

Patriots Plane Part of Broader Evacuation Effort

The use of the Patriots’ plane is not an isolated incident. The State Department has been utilizing numerous charter flights to facilitate the evacuation process. This particular instance, however, garnered attention due to the visibility of the Patriots’ branding and the symbolic nature of a sports team’s asset being used for humanitarian purposes. The New York Times reported on the use of one of the team’s private planes in San Jose, California, last month, highlighting the logistical network involved in these operations.

This isn’t the first time the Patriots’ aircraft have been utilized for government purposes. The planes, Boeing 767 jets operated by Omni Air International, have previously been used for deportation flights by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. In late 2022, a Sunwing airline used the Patriots’ plane to repatriate passengers stranded in the Dominican Republic following winter storms. The aircraft was deployed to China in 2020 to retrieve 1.2 million masks for healthcare professionals during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Regional Context and Ongoing Conflict

The evacuations are taking place against the backdrop of a continuing U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. The conflict has created a volatile security environment throughout the Middle East, prompting the State Department to prioritize the safety of American citizens in the region. Even as the exact details of the conflict remain fluid, the situation has led to increased travel warnings and a concerted effort to assist Americans who wish to leave. USA Today reports that nearly 24,000 Americans had returned to the U.S. As of Friday, March 6th.

The French news outlet Ouest-France also reported on the use of the Patriots’ plane for the evacuation of American citizens, highlighting the international attention the story has received.

As the situation in the Middle East remains unstable, the State Department is expected to continue facilitating the departure of American citizens who wish to leave. The ongoing evacuations underscore the complex challenges of protecting U.S. Nationals during times of international conflict and the reliance on both governmental and civilian resources to achieve this goal. The focus will likely remain on ensuring safe passage for those seeking to return home and monitoring the evolving security landscape in the region.
