The United States government has seized nearly 1 million barrels of Iranian oil that was destined for China, according to court documents and a statement from the U.S. Justice Department.

“This is the first criminal resolution involving a company that broke the law by facilitating the transportation and illegal sale of Iranian oil,” says the Department of Justice (DOJ).

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a foreign terrorist organization, is believed to have transported more than 980,000 barrels.

According to American justice, several entities linked to the IRGC participated in the plot to camouflage the origin of the oil and sell it to China.

The profits generated by this sale, if it had taken place, would have financed several malicious actions of the group, including the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, support for terrorism and the transgression of human rights.

Last April, the company that was responsible for operating the ship carrying the oil, Empire Navigation, pleaded guilty to charges of violating the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.

The IRGC, meanwhile, was fined nearly $2.5 million and given three years of corporate probation.
