The United States is deploying the world’s largest warship to Latin America, marking a major escalation in its campaign against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean Sea.

The Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, ordered this Friday that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford, with capacity for 90 aircraft, be moved from the Mediterranean to Latin American waters.

Their deployment marks a significant escalation in US military buildup in the region.

It is also likely to increase tensions with Venezuela, whose government Washington has long accused of harboring drug traffickers.

The carrier’s large aircraft load may include fighter aircraft and transport and reconnaissance aircraft. Its first long-term mission was in 2023.

It is unclear which ships will accompany the carrier as it moves to the Caribbean, but it may operate as part of a strike group that includes destroyers with missiles and other equipment.

From Venezuela, Maduro this Friday accused the United States of fabricating a case against his country and assured that he is preparing brigades to react to any threat from Washington.

“They promised that they would never get into a war again and they are inventing a war that we are going to avoid. With what? With the mobilization of the people of South America, because South America and the Caribbean, everything, says no to war, yes to peace, yes to prosperity, yes to harmony and coexistence,” he said in a televised speech.

“They invent an extravagant, vulgar, criminal and totally false story, already demonstrably false, Venezuela is a country free of coca leaf production, free of cocaine production, and we are going to achieve 100% free passage of a minuscule 5% that comes from Colombia,” he added.

A map of the Caribbean Sea, showing the positions of 10 American ships.

The US has increased its military presence in the Caribbean in recent weeks, which until now included another eight warships, a nuclear submarine and F-35 aircraft.

The North American country has carried out air attacks against vessels that, it claims, belong to drug traffickers.

The last one was this Friday, with “six narcoterrorist men” killed in the Caribbean Sea who, according to Hegseth, belonged to the Tren de Aragua criminal organization.

Hegseth posted a video on the social network X at the time of the attack. It shows a boat being targeted which then explodes and a cloud of smoke forms.

The Pentagon announced that the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford would deploy to the US Southern Command area of responsibility, which encompasses Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

The additional forces “will enhance and augment existing capabilities to disrupt drug trafficking, and reduce and dismantle transnational criminal organizations,” spokesman Sean Parnell said.

The aircraft carrier last publicly broadcast its location three days ago off the coast of Croatia in the Adriatic Sea.

The US has carried out a series of attacks on vessels in recent weeks, in what President Donald Trump has described as an effort to curb drug trafficking.

The attack reported this Friday was the tenth that the Trump administration has deployed against suspected drug traffickers since early September.

Most were in the Caribbean, but on October 21 and 22 it attacked ships in the Pacific Ocean.

Members of the US Congress, both Democrats and Republicans, have expressed concerns about the legality of the attacks and the president’s authority to order them.

On September 10, 25 Democratic US senators wrote to the White House and alleged that the US had attacked a ship days earlier “without evidence that the people on board and its cargo posed a threat” to the country.

Meanwhile, Republican Senator Rand Paul argued that such attacks require congressional approval.

Trump, who has designated the Aragua Train as a terrorist organization, claimed to have the legal authority to order the attacks.

“We have permission to do it, and if we were to do it by land, we might go to Congress,” the president told reporters at the White House on Wednesday.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio added: “If people want to stop seeing drug boats blow up, stop sending drugs to the US.”

The six deaths in the operation announced by Hegseth this Friday bring the total number of deaths in the US attacks to at least 43.

Analysts suggest that the attacks not only have to do with drug trafficking, but also with military pressure on the government of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela.

Trump accuses Maduro of being the leader of a drug trafficking organization, something the Venezuelan denies.
