USA: 9 years in prison for the son of the former leader of the Gulf Cartel

The US authorities reported this Thursday that Osiel Cárdenas Jr, son of the former head of the Gulf Cartel, has been sentenced to 109 months in prison for arms trafficking from the United States to Mexico.

The prosecutor’s office for the Southern District of Texas has indicated that the defendant, who must serve three years of supervised release and pay a fine of $20,000 (18,500 euros), pleaded guilty in August 2022 to trying to buy ten assault rifles for export them to Mexico.

The operation, which took place in April 2021, took place in a store parking lot in Brownsville, a Texas city that shares a border with Mexico. “Cárdenas had ordered another person to cross into Mexico to collect $15,000 (13,850 euros) for the weapons and to inform him when the arms transaction had been completed,” reads a statement.

Cárdenas, who is in custody pending transfer to a US prison, is the son of Osiel Cárdenas-Guillén, who is serving a 25-year sentence for drug trafficking in the United States.
