Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital has recognized Emergency nurse Laura Schmidle,RN,BSN,with the prestigious DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award honors nurses demonstrating extraordinary care, compassion and clinical skill.
Schmidle was nominated by a patient who praised her ability to provide comfort and find answers during a arduous time. The patient noted Schmidle’s empathy made a important difference, stating she “was the first nurse I have had since May 2021 that truly made me feel like she cared about what I was experiencing and that she wanted to help me find answers.”
The patient shared that Schmidle “Never once did I feel doubted… and provided all of the comfort that I needed.”
This recognition reflects Vandalia Health’s dedication to compassionate and patient-centered care. schmidle herself noted the importance of receiving feedback and the reward of earning patient trust during challenging times.
“To know that the care our team provides made such a difference to a patient and her family is greatly appreciated. The Emergency Department does not frequently enough receive feedback…Receiving the DAISY Award is a wonderful recognition of compassion,but the greatest reward is the gift of trust from our community to provide comfort and support to our patients when thay are in need,” she said.
Melissa Lockwood, chief Administrative Officer, Vandalia Health Mon Preston Memorial Hospital, expressed delight at presenting the award to Schmidle, saying her kindness and skill are invaluable to the community.
The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who lost his life at 33 due to complications from an autoimmune disease. His family created the award to honor the nurses who provided him with extraordinary care.
