Vandalism of Belgian Pioneers Monument in Congo: History, Controversy, and Investigation

The monument erected in memory of the Belgian pioneers in the Congo was therefore vandalized once more last Friday in the Cinquantenaire park. This listed monument was created by the sculptor Thomas Vinçotte and completed in 1921. It celebrates the memory of the explorers, missionaries and soldiers who intervened during the colonization of the Congo. This Friday, someone painted it with red paint. An investigation was opened to find the perpetrator of this act.

This is not the first time that this work has created controversy. Three years ago, a tag mentioning “Black lives matter” had already appeared, immediately sparking a reaction from Vlaams Belang.
