The Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith has banned Catholics from joining and working in antisocial and immoral organizations such as Freemasonry.

Responding to the questions of bishops from the Philippines, the Vatican’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of Faith once once more reiterated its order prohibiting Catholics from joining and working in anti-social and immoral organizations such as Freemasonry. The question was raised by Monsignor Hulito Cortez, Bishop of the Diocese of Dumangete.
The Bishop sought the Dicastery’s advice citing concern and concern that members from dioceses were joining anti-social organizations such as Freemasonry. A committee of bishops in the Philippines was tasked to study these concerns.
The Dicastery then decided to issue a statement covering two approaches.
At the doctrinal level, the Dicastery reiterated that membership in Freemason organizations is prohibited for a believer because of the incompatibility between the Catholic faith and Freemasonry. The Dicastery underlined that the measure applies to any ecclesiastic registered with these organizations.
The second approach is related to the pastoral plan. The Dicastery calls for catechesis in all parishes on the causes of conflict between the Catholic faith and Freemasonry.
The Dicastery reiterated that the declaration signed by then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Secretary of the Congregation Jerome Hammer, with the approval of Pope John Paul II, that Catholics registered in Freemason organizations “are in a state of grave sin” still stands today.
