However, before the city’s playgrounds fully reopen for the season, a comprehensive safety inspection is underway. More than 1,800 playgrounds across Vienna are being meticulously checked and repaired by the Wiener Stadtgärten, the city’s parks and gardens department, to ensure a safe environment for young residents.
The annual pre-season check focuses on identifying and addressing potential hazards that may have developed over the winter months. This includes everything from loose swings and damaged climbing frames to worn-out safety surfaces. Approximately 9,000 individual pieces of playground equipment will be scrutinized to prevent injuries and provide peace of mind for parents.
“We check the chains, we check the wood,” explained Georg Lepiczeck of the Wiener Stadtgärten, highlighting the thoroughness of the inspections. A primary concern is the deterioration of wooden elements, where splinters or protruding pieces could pose a risk to children. Foundations are also being carefully examined to ensure stability.
The inspection process isn’t just a technical assessment; it’s a hands-on experience. Teams from the Spielplatzsicherheit (playground safety) division are personally testing each piece of equipment. This includes verifying adequate ground clearance on slides and swings, and ensuring all structures can safely support an adult’s weight – a crucial step for potential rescue situations.
“We have to test all the equipment as adults,” Lepiczeck emphasized. “The equipment must be able to withstand adults, just in case a child needs to be rescued, you have to be able to obtain on every slide or into every tube, that is exceptionally important.” The Wiener Stadtgärten staff can often be seen playfully testing the equipment themselves, bringing a lighthearted approach to a serious task.
Annual Inspections Complement Seasonal Checks
These post-winter checks are not the only safety measures in place. Similar to routine vehicle inspections, Vienna’s playgrounds undergo a more detailed annual inspection, involving carpenters, locksmiths, and other skilled tradespeople to address any identified repairs. This comprehensive approach ensures ongoing maintenance and long-term safety.
The city’s commitment to playground safety extends beyond routine maintenance. According to the Stadt Wien website, Vienna offers a variety of specialized playgrounds, including Wasserspielplätze (water playgrounds), Waldspielplätze (forest playgrounds), and themed playgrounds, each with its own unique set of safety considerations.
The Wiener Stadtgärten also maintain numerous parks and green spaces throughout the city, many of which include additional recreational facilities. Parks in Vienna offer amenities such as sports fields, skate parks, and even beach volleyball courts.
