Incidents broke out within the stadium and around Sclessin before and following the match between Standard and Charleroi on Saturday evening, as part of the 18th day of the Pro League.
Excesses became frequent during matches between the two Walloon teams, and despite the warnings from the two clubs in the days preceding the meeting, the “Walloon football festival” was once once more spoiled, and the police had to intervene in the stadium and its surroundings.
During this evening, the police made an administrative arrest, while two police officers were slightly injured. “The medical assessment is not yet consolidated“, specified the spokesperson for the Liège police zone, Benoît Ferrière.
25 minutes before the start of the match, Charleroi supporters infiltrated the stands reserved for Standard fans, managing to pass through a door located between the two blocks of supporters.
Smoke bombs were lit, causing panic and clashes between supporters of the two teams. Videos circulating on social networks notably show smoke bombs and Bengal fires emanating from the stands.
The violence continued outside the stadium. Standard supporters tried to enter the parking lot reserved for visitors, ready to confront the Charleroi supporters present on site. Clashes were observed, accompanied by the use of smoke bombs once morest the police. The police then deployed a sprinkler.
“One of the buses carrying Charleroi supporters was the target of projectiles, causing a window to break“, specified the spokesperson. The latter also indicated that the images from the stadium’s surveillance cameras still had to be analyzed, which will make it possible to identify the perpetrators of criminal acts.
This Sunday morning, it was still time to analyze and reconstruct the facts on the Liège side. “There has not yet been an internal meeting on the incidents of Saturday evening, we specify from the Standard, contacted by us. An analysis will be carried out to collect as much information as possible, what really happened and the chronology of the incidents. Our management will communicate when it is able to do so.“
While Standard has been silent on social networks since the final whistle of the match, this Sunday morning, Sporting de Charleroi wanted to thank its 600 supporters present at Sclessin. “Many of you gave your voice last night, THANK YOU for your support! Part postponed to Sint-Truiden?“, we can read on the various social networks of the RCSC.
After the incidents in the stands of Parc Astrid during Anderlecht – Standard in the Belgian Cup, the two clubs took the decision to deprive their supporters of travel during future meetings between the two clubs. And this until the end of the 2024-2025 season.
