Rennes to Build low-Carbon College, Prioritizing sustainability and Social Equity

Rennes, France – December 4, 2025 – A new public college is slated to open in the Beauregard district of Rennes by 2029, representing a significant investment of over €35 million and a bold vision for the future of school architecture. The project, spearheaded by the Department of Ille-et-Vilaine, aims to deliver a low-carbon building that fosters student well-being and promotes social diversity within the city.

Located adjacent to beauregard Park and benefiting from the upcoming Trambus line in 2030, the 8,000 m² college will accommodate nearly 700 students. The design, by Ylé Architectes, prioritizes sustainability through a largely wooden structure, biosourced insulation materials like cellulose wadding and chopped straw, and photovoltaic panels for on-site energy production. Natural ventilation will further reduce reliance on mechanical systems, positioning the college as a benchmark for sustainable school design in Rennes.

Beyond its environmental credentials, the college is designed to enhance the student experience. A central, glazed interior street will connect two main sections, with classrooms opening onto vegetated areas to maximize natural light and create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. Stepped playgrounds, planted areas, and educational paths will replace conventional concrete courtyards, while careful attention to acoustic and visual comfort aims to reduce school fatigue and improve concentration.

The project also features a shared catering facility for both middle school students and departmental restaurant staff, optimizing public resources and minimizing the ecological footprint.

This new college will replace the Rosa Parks Middle school, currently facing challenges due to its isolated location.The move to Beauregard represents a strategic shift aimed at fostering greater school diversity and integrating the college into a rapidly developing urban habitat.
