European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will travel to Kyiv this week for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
She will be accompanied by EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, her spokesman said on Twitter on Tuesday. The meeting will take place before the donor conference planned for Saturday in Warsaw, at which money is to be collected for the millions of refugees and displaced persons from the Ukraine war.
A spokeswoman did not want to name the exact day when asked. Selenskyj had mentioned a phone call with von der Leyen in a video message to the Ukrainian population that was published on Tuesday night. Selenskyj also announced a visit by Chancellor Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) “in the near future”.
Metsola was already in Kyiv
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, traveled to Kyiv last week. She met Zelenskyy and representatives of the Ukrainian government. During her visit, the Maltese assured Ukraine of extensive support from the EU. “We will help rebuild your cities,” she said.
Few senior politicians had traveled to the country since Russia’s war once morest Ukraine began on February 24. In mid-March, the heads of government from Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia traveled to Kyiv to show solidarity with Ukraine.
