The future of the VR46 Racing Team in MotoGP appears set to remain with Ducati, despite recent exploratory talks with Aprilia regarding a potential partnership starting in 2027. While Aprilia initiated contact to discuss supplying satellite bikes for the upcoming era of 850cc machines, team principal Uccio Salucci has indicated that a novel agreement with Ducati is nearing completion.
VR46 has enjoyed a successful relationship with Ducati since entering the premier class in 2022, quickly becoming a competitive force and securing multiple race wins. This partnership was further strengthened in 2024 when VR46 transitioned to a factory-supported outfit, with rider Fabio di Giannantonio receiving the latest Ducati machinery directly from the manufacturer. The current agreement between the two parties is set to expire after the 2026 season, leading to speculation about potential alternatives.
Recent months have seen VR46 linked with a possible move to Yamaha, fueled by team owner Valentino Rossi’s ongoing role as a brand ambassador for the Japanese manufacturer. However, Salucci confirmed that while discussions with Aprilia took place, a switch to the Noale-based brand was never seriously considered. “We spoke with Aprilia a little bit because Aprilia wanted to speak with us and we are gentlemen,” Salucci told Motorsport.com. “I have known Massimo Rivola for many, many years… We spoke sometimes, two or three times [because] why not? But I never thought of changing from Ducati.”

Ducati’s Satellite Team Landscape
Ducati’s position in the MotoGP grid has shifted recently, with a maximum of eight bikes on the grid until 2024. The move of Pramac Racing to Yamaha last year has left Ducati with two satellite teams alongside its factory squad. Securing VR46’s continued participation is therefore crucial for maintaining Ducati’s presence and competitiveness within the championship.
Contract Negotiations Nearing Completion
Salucci revealed that negotiations with Ducati are in their final stages, with an announcement potentially coming within the next month. Motorsport.com reports that the anticipated contract will span three years, covering the 2027, 2028, and 2029 seasons. “We are very close to signing. There remain some small, small details. I think in the next month [there may be an announcement]. We are really close to signing for Ducati again,” Salucci stated.
When pressed on his satisfaction with the relationship between VR46 and Ducati, Salucci was unequivocal: “For sure. It’s the best bike in the world.” This sentiment underscores the strength of the partnership and the team’s confidence in Ducati’s machinery.
Commercial Agreements and Future Announcements
The ongoing discussions surrounding manufacturer and team partnerships are taking place alongside negotiations for a new commercial agreement between teams and MotoGP Sports Entertainment (formerly Dorna), which will come into effect next year. Until this overarching agreement is finalized, formal announcements regarding rider lineups and manufacturer collaborations for 2027 are unlikely to be made.
The confirmation of VR46’s continued partnership with Ducati will provide stability within the MotoGP landscape as the sport prepares for significant technical changes in 2027. The new regulations, including the introduction of 850cc engines, are expected to reshape the competitive order, and having established teams like VR46 aligned with leading manufacturers will be vital for a smooth transition.
Looking ahead, the focus will shift to finalizing the commercial agreement and then confirming rider lineups for the 2027 season. The MotoGP community will be watching closely to see how these developments unfold and how they will impact the championship’s future.
