On the 15th Crosetto at Copasir: towards new arms decree for Ukraine

A hearing of the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosetto, is scheduled for next Wednesday at Copasir. The summons should be linked to the new decree – the ninth – on military aid to be sent to Ukraine. The list of materials is classified but, as on previous occasions, will be illustrated by the minister at Copasir, whose members are required to maintain confidentiality regarding the contents of the hearings. It was Crosetto himself who confirmed last Monday that the sending of a new aid package “to Ukraine so that it can continue to defend itself from Russia” will soon be approved. There might therefore be an approval on Wednesday. For some time now, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called for greater efforts from allied countries. He requested, in particular, air defense systems, missiles, projectiles. Italy, together with France, has already supplied Kiev with a Samp-T missile system. Another may now be sent. The British Defense Minister, Grant Shapps, reported in recent days that Italy would also supply Storm Shadow/Scalp cruise missiles which can hit at a distance of 500 km; offensive characteristics, therefore, with the possibility of reaching objectives in Russia. Furthermore, Copasir is at the center of a dispute triggered by the Alleanza Verde Sinistra group, which asked in a letter sent to the presidents of the Chamber and Senate to have its own member in the parliamentary body. By law the Committee is made up of 5 members of the majority and 5 of the opposition, which also has the president (the dem Lorenzo Guerini). “The imminent examination by Copasir of such a relevant act as the ministerial decree on further transfers of weapons to Ukraine, which might include offensive weapons – write the Avs group leaders of the Senate and Chamber, Peppe De Cristofaro and Luana Zanella – leads us to once once more request legislative intervention aimed at modifying the composition of the Committee”.
