Urgent Breaking News: Heat Wave to Hit Marseille and Bouches-du-Rhône
Published on: June 10, 2025 at 12:12 p.m.
Have you felt the heat recently? Brace yourselves: temperatures are set to soar in Marseille and Bouches-du-Rhône. From Wednesday, June 11, a “new Saharan rise” will send the mercury climbing to a sweltering 37°C in some areas.
Weather Forecasts Detail Extreme Heat
Following the recent haze from forest fires in Canada, a new weather phenomenon is on the horizon. Meteorologist Paul Marquis, founder of Le temps de Marignane, forecasts a sharp increase in temperatures, aiming for a peak of 37°C in the interior regions of the department.
Paul Marquis describes this event as a “transient” heat wave due to its nature of being a short-lived phenomenon, unlike the persistent “heat dome.”
“The hot air mass will bring dust from the Sahara but will be brief. It’s a ‘feather of heat’ rather than a prolonged heat dome,” explains Marquis.
Impacts on Local Regions
While coastal areas like Marseille should experience slightly milder conditions with temperatures peaking at about 29°C, the northeast of Bouches-du-Rhône—particularly around Trets and Peyrolles-en-Provence—is expected to be the hardest hit. Météo-France predicts places could experience up to 34°C on Wednesday.
This will mark the first time this year that temperatures reach such highs, as the June average in Marignane typically hovers at 28°C.
Nighttime Temperatures Won’t Offer Relief
Residents should also expect “tropical” nights, with temperatures failing to drop below 19-21°C near the coast. This unusual overnight warmth will persist until Sunday, June 15.
Expert Insights and Tips
Paul Marquis and Météo-France urge residents to take necessary precautions, warning that the rapid rise in temperatures poses a health risk for the most vulnerable. He recommends staying hydrated, avoiding peak sun hours, and utilizing air-conditioning if available. Respecting safety measures will be paramount to navigate this brief but intense heat wave.
