Around 70 properties are located in the immediate vicinity of the river, many of which are holiday homes.

“[The river] had risen considerably and is in flood with all the rain,” Civil defence Taupō stated shortly before 9:30 am. Though, the agency confirmed the river had not breached its banks and water levels are expected to fall.
