West Nile Fever Alert expanded Across Andalusia as Equine Cases Rise

Andalusian authorities have broadened West Nile Virus (WNV) alert zones following the confirmed detection of the disease in several horses across the region. Public Health officials are intensifying surveillance and urging residents to adopt preventative measures as the risk of transmission increases.

Alert Zones Established in Multiple Provinces

The General Directorate of Public Health and Pharmaceutical Management announced today that the municipalities of Carboneras and Benahadux in Almería province are now designated as alert areas. This designation follows the identification of West Nile Fever in two horses located within these communities. The alert will remain in effect for four weeks, or until surveillance data indicates a decline in viral circulation, currently scheduled for november 13th.

This brings the total number of municipalities under alert or at high risk for WNV to a significant number across Andalusia. Additional areas include locales in Cádiz, Jaén, Málaga, and Seville provinces, reflecting a widespread increase in virus activity.A third equine case was recently reported in palma del Río, Córdoba, situated more than 1.5 kilometers from any residential areas.

Province Municipality Alert Until
Almería Carboneras November 13
Almería Benahadux November 13
Cádiz Chiclana de la Frontera October 23
Cádiz Tarifa (Tahivilla) November 5
Jaén Baeza October 24
Jaén La Carolina november 5

Enhanced Surveillance and Control Measures

The declaration of these alert areas triggers an immediate escalation of surveillance efforts. These include increased entomological monitoring – tracking mosquito populations – and also intensified animal and human health surveillance. Local administrations are required to bolster their existing Municipal Plans for Surveillance and Control of WNV-transmitting vectors. This means increased mosquito control measures within population centers and surrounding areas within a 1.5-kilometer radius.

Did You Know? Mosquitoes are most active during dawn and dusk, making these times particularly risky for potential exposure to West Nile Virus.

Human Cases Remain Limited, But Vigilance is Key

Despite the increase in animal cases, health authorities report that laboratory tests have ruled out West Nile Virus infection in 333 individuals tested to date. Currently, only one confirmed human case has been identified, an adult from Mojácar, almería, who has as recovered. A probable case was also reported in a minor from Andújar, Jaén, who similarly made a full recovery.

Entomological surveillance reveals varying mosquito densities across the region. High levels of mosquito abundance have been detected in La Puebla del Río, Seville, while moderate levels were reported in municipalities across Cádiz, Córdoba, Jaén, and Málaga. A total of 200 mosquito traps are currently deployed throughout andalusia to monitor populations.

Protecting Livestock

Officials also advise livestock farmers to take preventative measures, including frequent water changes in animal drinkers and the elimination of puddles or leaks that could serve as mosquito breeding grounds.

Pro Tip: Regularly empty standing water from containers around your property – flowerpots, gutters, old tires – to eliminate potential mosquito breeding sites.

Public Health Recommendations

The Ministry of health emphasizes that both local administrations and citizens must remain vigilant in adopting protective measures. These include using registered mosquito repellents, wearing light-colored clothing that covers most of the body, and avoiding strong perfumes or scented soaps. Additionally, residents are encouraged to install mosquito nets, utilize insecticides, and turn off unneeded lights, as light attracts mosquitoes.

Understanding West Nile Virus

West Nile Virus is a mosquito-borne disease that can cause flu-like symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, and fatigue. In severe cases, it can lead to neurological illness such as encephalitis or meningitis. While most people infected with WNV experience mild or no symptoms, the elderly, immunocompromised individuals, and young children are at higher risk of severe illness. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the virus is maintained in nature through a cycle involving mosquitoes, birds, and horses. Humans and other mammals are incidental hosts.
