The idea comes straight out of science fiction. In a Facebook post and then in a long interview with The Verge , Mark Zuckerberg even goes so far as to consider the “metaverse” as “the Grail”. He announced the creation of a team entirely dedicated to this project. Its objective: to make Facebook a key “metaverse” company by 2026.
As futuristic as these statements may sound, the concept of “metaverse” is nothing new, and Mark Zuckerberg is far from the first to bring it up. This ultra-connected and interactive network is mentioned for the first time in 1992, in the science fiction novel “Snow Crash”, by Neal Stephenson. It designates a three-dimensional virtual universe in which we can evolve and exchange via an avatar or a hologram, in particular thanks to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The film “Ready Player One”, directed in 2018 by Steven Spielberg and inspired by the eponymous novel by Ernest Cline, also makes extensive reference to it.
