What We Asked Our Virtual Assistants in 2024: From Celebrity Heights to Football Dreams
Virtual assistants like Alexa have become ubiquitous in homes across the UK, readily providing the weather forecast, the latest football scores, and answers to a world of questions – even those more unusual.
As the year 2024 comes to a close, companies like Amazon, parent company of Alexa, have released insights into the most common requests fielded by these digital helpers. Predictably, some were straightforward inquiries: “What is the value of bitcoin?”, “what is the population of Earth?”, and “what does AI mean?” – revealing a public simultaneously intrigued by finance, science, and the ever-evolving world around us.
But what truly fascinated us in the year?
Game On: Football is King
The answer, when it comes to search trends, was often “Alexa, what happened in the last football match?”, “What is ”
Football dominated the sports category, with all 10 of the top sought-after football facts relating to Premier League teams or the England national team.
Big names like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland were popular search terms.
Predictably, there was a spike in queries for football-related topics during summer’s European Championship.
“Alexa, is it coming home?” echoed through homes across the country, embodying the nation’s hopes and dreams on the world stage.
Celebrity Fascinations: From Royalty to Rock
Our fascination with celebrities proved as strong as ever.
While David Attenborough topped the charts as a national treasure, other figures like Paul McCartney and Tom Cruise also generated much interest. Perhaps surprisingly, centuries might as well have peeled away with entreaties,
“Alexa, how many wives did Henry VIII have?”
Taylor Swift emerged as a clear favourite, dominating searches for celebrity heights, ages, and net worth.
She outpaced even the richest person on Earth, Elon Musk, in query volume for net worth.
It seems the global pop star even eclipsing music icons like Eminem, Ed Sheeran, Beyoncé, and Adele in terms of play requests.
While Taylor Swift’s albums dominated, landing three albums in the top 5, Sabrina Carpenter’s “Short n’ Sweet” emerged victorious, proving she still holds a special place in the hearts (and music libraries) of herales.
