WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that vaccination coverage has declined.

Despite these deaths, “data show a decline in vaccination coverage among health workers and people over 60 years old, two of the high-risk groups,” the head of the U.N. health agency told a news conference in Geneva lamented.

“WHO recommends that high-risk groups receive a COVID-19 vaccine within 12 months of the last dose,” he recalled.

More than 7 million deaths from the disease have been reported to the World Health Organization, but the true toll from the pandemic appears to be much higher.

The virus that causes COVID-19 was first discovered in Wuhan, China, in late 2019.

The World Health Organization urges governments to continue monitoring and sequencing the virus and ensuring access to affordable and reliable tests, treatments and vaccines.
