Why do we talk regarding “childhood cancer”, as if it were separate from oncology?
“Under this generic term, we are, in fact, in two opposing worlds. There are childhood cancers on the one hand, and adult cancers on the other. The first reason is frequency. You have more than 400,000 adult cancers per year compared to 2,500 in children. The epidemiology of cancer types is also very different. If for adults, the most common cancers are cancer of the colon, rectum, prostate, breast and lung, in children, they do not exist. The most common are leukemias, brain tumors, lymphomas and neuroblastomas (extracranial malignant tumors). If we look at large groups of cancers, almost half of pediatric cancers do not exist in adults and more than 80% of adult cancers do not exist in children. »
