(Keystone-ATS) WTO Director General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala does not understand those who, like Donald Trump, question the “relevance” of her institution. Ten days before the ministerial, she also admits that the negotiations are “difficult”.

“People take for granted the fact that three quarters of world trade operates according to the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO),” the Nigerian told a few journalists in Geneva on Friday. “Without these rules, what would the situation be?” she asks a few days before the 13th ministerial meeting in Abu Dhabi.

The former American president had threatened to withdraw the United States from the organization and had pursued a protectionist policy. He might relaunch these attacks once morest the WTO if he is elected in a few months.

Dr Ngozi recognizes that dozens of elections around the world this year influence states when they negotiate. The 164 members must try to find “the appropriate measures, regardless of who comes to power and where,” she said.
