Wild Boar Causes Chaos in Berlin Shopping Mall

A wild boar caused a brief disruption at a Berlin shopping mall on Friday, prompting a police response and drawing in animal welfare experts. The animal entered a home decor shop in the Koepenick district around 9 a.m. Local time, according to police reports.

Authorities were alerted when the boar slipped through automatic glass doors and began exploring the store’s aisles, causing staff to evacuate the premises. A team from Berlin’s Tierpark zoo was dispatched to the scene, but quickly determined that tranquilizing the animal within the confines of the store was impractical, citing the layout of the building.

Police officers, assisted by zoo personnel, ultimately guided the boar out of the mall using wooden pallets to create a pathway towards a nearby forest, from which authorities believe it originated. A spokesperson for the Berlin police confirmed the animal successfully returned to the wooded area. The incident was captured in a photograph released on social media by the police department.

This is not the first instance of wildlife venturing into urban areas of Berlin, which is surrounded by extensive forests. In July 2023, a wild boar caused a stir in southwestern Berlin when it was initially mistaken for a lioness, sparking a brief period of public alarm.

Similar incidents involving escaped or stray animals have occurred elsewhere in Germany in recent years. In May 2023, residents of Erfurt were surprised by a kangaroo hopping across a busy road after escaping from a private property. Further back, in 2019, authorities spent several days recapturing a deadly cobra that had escaped in Herne, prompting warnings to residents to keep windows closed and avoid tall grass. A more tragic incident occurred in Leipzig in 2016, when zookeepers were forced to shoot and kill a lion after it escaped its enclosure and a tranquilizer proved ineffective.

Authorities have periodically reminded the public to be vigilant about the potential presence of wild animals in and around urban areas.
